Beirut-The Flying Club Cup (album)Being a learning girl,
student of life if you will, I love discovering new things. One of my favourite things to discover are artists; "smart artists" to be more precise. Two new members of this self-created genre are Beirut and Audrey Kawasaki. How are they smart you say? Well, in the band's case [Beirut] the lyrics and music are of high intelligence in my book. Lyrics' brightness are measured by the complexity of the versus and metaphors. If at first I don't understand what the purpose or message of the song is, and am forced to delve deeper, I enjoy it. I love
searching for answers, and don't appreciate someone telling them to me. When it comes to instruments, I say the more the merrier, as long as the sounds are cohesive. (I also have a soft spot for trumpets, violins and pianos).
For Audrey, her intelligence is rated by not her talent, but how she utilizes it. For example, she takes an ancient technique of shading (etching) and mixes it with thick, solid lines to create a unique, versatile work. Her drawings and paintings also scream complexity and brilliance. "The themes in Audrey Kawasaki's work are contradictions within themselves. Her work is both innocent and erotic." -bio
I'm not entirely sure how this form of art is so smart, seeing how it is not alive--but that's it! It is living, breathing, in a certain way. It was once a mere idea in the womb of her mind and now she has given birth to a painting more real than our thoughts are; it's tangible, there is proof of it's existence rather than having faith in the idea. That's all they are, ideas. No one knows where they come or where they go, or if they're really original. But when you actually create art, with your hands and your touch, you know, the world knows, it's you, your voice, it's your baby screaming for life. Nay, it's your baby
singing in life. it's a piece or your soul forming truth, something concrete.
